Ten Day Sample - Numeracy

NOTE:  For R-2, 3-4, 5-7, whole school and rural small group setting

Overall Focus:  Common lesson structure across the whole school, using open ended tasks and developing common planning processes.

 Term 1 Focus: Lesson structure, using open ended tasks to assess prior knowledge, making open ended tasks accessible to all
Day 1:  Model structure lesson for target teachers, planning session with teachers.
Day 2:  Model using open ended tasks throughout the lesson, planning sessions with teachers.
Day 3: Side by side teaching to follow up planning session.
 
Term 2 Focus: Developing rich open ended tasks to assess learning and to drive learning designs
Day 4: Model a lesson involving rich open ended task and model assessment strategy
Day 5: Model open ended tasks and feedback to students to enable students to set individual learning goals. Planning with teachers.
Day 6: Side by side teaching as follow up to planning session.

Term 3 Focus: Developing learning designs (unit plans) and using open ended tasks to assess learning
Day 7: Developing meaningful rubrics with students, using assessment data to plan for instruction, introduce and adapt planing protocols for unit plans.
Day 8: Planning units of work with teachers, guiding the teachers through the process of planning learning designs.

Term 4 Focus: Building upon unit plans, focusing on explicit learning goals and open ended tasks
Day 9: Side by side teaching developing questioning and conferencing with students. Guide planning a unit of work.
Day 10: Side by side teaching, feedback on unit plans written by teachers.


Full Day Sample - Numeracy

Note: Day two of ten days.

Focus for the day: Model using open ended tasks throughout the lesson. Model workshop lesson structure introduced on Day 1. Content of the lesson negotiated by teachers in Day 1 planning session. Planning sessions with teachers for side by side teaching on Day 3.

Before school: Organisation of resources, confirmation of daily schedule, meeting with school leadership to fine tune focus for day.
Lesson 1: Model with teacher A. eg using pattern blocks to introduce equivalent fractions, using open ended tasks in the warm up, building upon this task in independent work.
Lesson 2: Model with teacher B. eg using base ten resources to support subtraction process to solve open ended tasks in the warm up and the independent work.
Lesson 3: Model with teacher C. eg using tiling technique to explore area and perimeter, using open ended tasks.
Lesson 4: Model with teacher D. eg using IT to develop language of location, using Google maps and using open ended tasks in the warm up and the independent work.
Lesson 5: Debrief with teachers and plan the focus of the side by side teaching sessions scheduled for Day 3.
Staff Meeting: Professional development activity with whole staff eg looking at open ended tasks across the year level in the content area of fractions
After School: Debrief and planning with school leadership.
